GAINESVILLE - Junior outside hitter Marcie Hampton recorded an NCAA personal-best 21 kills in leading No. 7 Florida to its 21st consecutive win and a spot in the second round of the NCAA Championship, sweeping Florida A&M 3-0 (30-18, 30-16, 30-26) Thursday.
Florida (29-2) moves on to face Arizona State (16-14) at 7 tonight for a chance to advance to the Gainesville Region on Dec. 8. The Sun Devils beat the College of Charleston 3-1 in the opening match.
The Gators hit a season-best .429 in the contest - the second-best hitting percentage for the Gators in an NCAA match in school history.
Florida finished with more kills (57-41), aces (4-1), digs (48-27) and blocks (12.0-2.0) against Florida A&M.
Tampa to host men's soccer finals in 2008
Tampa and Pepin Stadium will host the Division II men's soccer championship on Dec. 5 and 7, 2008.
"This is an outstanding announcement for our community," UT athletic director Larry Marfise said.
Other prominent college events heading here include the ACC men's basketball tournament (March 8-11, St. Pete Times Forum), first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games (2008, Times Forum) and the NCAA women's Final Four (2008, Times Forum).
MORE UT: After winning the Division II national title in volleyball and a third-place finish in women's soccer, Tampa is in second place in the Division II Sports Academy Directors Cup. The standings rank teams on a point scale that currently includes all fall sports. With 219 points, Tampa is second behind Grand Valley State's 300.
SAINT LEO: Sophomore Julie Carusone has posted times that rank in the top 10 in the nation among Division II swimmers in 2006-07. Carusone swam the women's 200-meter individual medley in 2 minutes, 10.6 seconds, eighth-best in the nation this year. She also swam the 100-meter breast stroke event in 1:06.84, ninth-best this year.
