The release of the 2007-08 Pasco County school calendar may bring a little early holiday cheer to students and parents who want those summer vacation days to linger well into August the way they used to. The first day of classes next school year will be Aug. 20 - the earliest date allowed under a new state law that says school can't start more than 14 days before Labor Day. This past fall, before the law went into effect, classes started Aug. 8. With the current school year ending on May 23, that will give students an extra 12 days of summer break. The school year will still be 180 days. So the later start next August means the 2007-08 school year will also end later, on June 4. State education officials also pushed back the start of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, from late February to mid March. Before you make any vacation plans, though, note that back-to-school orientations will be held Aug. 14 for middle and high school students and Aug. 16 for elementary students.
