Midfield ideal for JU's Borschel

From the time Jenny Borschel Lakewood first played soccer at age 5, she liked attacking, assisting, stopping opponents and playing offense.

Last month, the senior midfielder capped off a four-year career at Jacksonville, finishing the season second on the team in points (10) and assists (four) and third in goals (three). Overall, Borschel posted 18 goals, 11 assists and 47 points.

"I like to be involved in all parts of the game," said Borschel, 21, "so the midfield position was perfect for me.

"Midfield lets you attack and defend and really be a part of the whole game. I played mostly the outside and there you need speed and to be able to cross."

Offensively, Borschel said, a midfielder must go forward and still be able to run in line and mark players too. With sometimes non-stop running, the midfield position is an endurance-based one, she said.

She started club soccer with Largo United and later played for the Lakewood Soccer Club.

"I learned a lot when I was at Largo, and improved my skills with the help of a trainer and coach Tom Blauvelt," Borschel said. "When I had an opportunity to have the coaches from Jacksonville watch me and they offered me a chance to play for them, I was thrilled."

In the transition from high school to Division I, Borschel found that the competition increased along with the time and discipline required.

"In high schoool, we practiced maybe 11/2 hours, and when I came to Jacksonville, it was nothing to practice 3-4 hours," she said. "Between soccer and academics, there was little free time. In high school, my time management was pretty wishy-washy, but I adjusted okay in college. It was difficult, but not impossible."

Borschel adjusted and started 16 games as a freshman. She was third in points with 11 and was on the Atlantic Sun academic all-conference squad.

In each of her four years with the Dolphins, Borschel was among the team's top three in goals, points and assists.

Her junior and senior years were highlighted with consecutive trips to the A-Sun Tournament and a championship this year, the school's first since 2000.

"Winning the conference was definitely a highlight," Borschel said. "There are three of us seniors, and we wanted to go out with a bang. ... That was a great way to finish the season and our time here."

The Dolphins (11-10-1) fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to national No. 2 seed Florida State.

Borschel, who graduates in May, will live in Jacksonville to attend graduate school. She plans to continue playing, most likely in a beach league.
