- Fierce fighting between coalition soldiers and militants Wednesday in Baqubah effectively shut down the city, as its university, public schools and many stores remained closed. In all, 15 civilians and 13 insurgents were killed across Iraq. Fifty-two bodies were found in Baghdad.

- Forty-seven people died in violence Thursday, including 37 whose bodies were found across the country.

- Sectarian attacks continued Friday in Baghdad, with at least 12 Iraqis killed and a Sunni Arab mosque damaged in Baghdad.

- An Interior Ministry official said Friday that 1,846 civilians were killed in Iraq in November, a 43 percent increase from the estimated 1,289 civilians killed in October. According to a count by the Associated Press, 1,923 civilians were killed in Iraq in November.

Military

- A U.S. Air Force jet with one pilot crashed Monday while supporting American soldiers fighting in Anbar province. A U.S. military statement provided no information about the suspected cause of the crash or the fate of the pilot. Al-Jazeera satellite television said the pilot was killed.

- The U.S. command said Monday that three soldiers were killed and two wounded during combat operations in Baghdad on Nov. 26.

- The U.S. military said Friday that an American soldier was killed during combat in the capital Thursday, raising the number of U.S. troops who died in November to at least 67, well under the 105 reported dead in October.

Rebuilding

- Iraq's prime minister, president and speaker of Parliament made a joint appearance on national television Nov. 26 to call for an end to Iraq's sectarian conflict and vowed to track down those responsible for the attack that killed more than 200 people on Nov. 23.

- In new diplomatic activity, Iraq's president turned to Iran on Monday for help to stem the bloodshed, and Iraqi officials said talks between President Bush and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki would focus on giving Iraqis more control so U.S. forces can withdraw.

- Bush's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, said Monday the conflict in Iraq had entered a new phase requiring changes. "Obviously everyone would agree things are not proceeding well enough or fast enough," he said.

- The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Tuesday to extend for one year the mandate of the 160,000-strong multinational force in Iraq. The Iraqi Parliament voted to extend the country's state of emergency through December.

- Bush on Tuesday made clear his view that Iraq has not yet fallen into civil war and voiced determination to keep U.S. troops there despite growing pressure to bring them home. "We will continue to be flexible, and we'll make the changes necessary to succeed. But there's one thing I'm not going to do: I'm not going to pull our troops off the battlefield before the mission is complete," he said.

- The bipartisan Iraq Study Group, led by James Baker and Lee Hamilton, announced Wednesday night that it had reached common ground and would make its recommendations on this Wednesday. The New York Times reported the panel would recommend a gradual drawdown of U.S. troops in the country but not a specific timetable.
