Call for Yule parade gets cool reception

A proposal by City Council member Jim Ronecker to hold an annual Christmas parade was quashed by other council members Tuesday night. No one really said anything; they were just kind of silent when Ronecker suggested a parade. He said he got the idea from attending Safety Harbor's annual parade and thought it brought a real sense of community. Finally, Mayor Jerry Beverland told Ronecker he could have the parade if he agreed to organize it for the next several years. Ronecker said he'd look into it. "I should have said not only does he have to be in charge of it for the next four or five years," Beverland said, "he has to play Santa Claus." Ronecker, who is running for mayor in March after Beverland's term expires, had a different idea. "Well, after March he won't be the mayor anymore, so maybe he can volunteer to be my Santa," Ronecker said.

Agency seeks mentor volunteers

Gulf Coast Community Care needs volunteers age 30 and older for its mentoring program. Each volunteer is matched with a child who needs a positive adult role model. Many of the children are in foster care or live with a single parent who is going to school and working. There is a special need for volunteers for children of all ages. Volunteers are provided social events and support by the agency's staff. No experience is necessary, and there is no cost. Volunteers spend a few hours a week in simple activities such as reading, fishing, baking, teaching a craft or visiting a park with a child. Gulf Coast Community Care has children throughout Pinellas waiting for mentors. To learn how you can make a lasting difference in the life of a child, call 479-1813, 479-1841 or 479-1831
