BRANDON - Family members of the student struck and killed in a school crosswalk are holding a memorial service this weekend to celebrate Camden Allen White's life.

Camden, 15, was struck and killed Monday in a crosswalk in front of Brandon High School. He was hit by an eastbound Oldsmobile Alero driven by 22-year-old Kami Bell, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The impact threw him onto the windshield of a westbound sport utility vehicle, which was stopped behind another car at the crosswalk.

No charges have been brought in the case, which remained under investigation Thursday.

A memorial service for Camden will start at noon Saturday at Paul Sanders Park on Bloomingdale Avenue just east of Kings Avenue, according to Camden's uncle, Francis Bragg.

Camden's family also is pushing for stricter traffic safety controls at the schools.

Though signs alert motorists to the crosswalk on Victoria Street, the road is not a designated school zone with flashing warning lights and a reduced speed limit.

The county has plans to create school zones, complete with flashing lights and reduced speed limits, for all schools in the county. Brandon High is on that list, but the county doesn't have a date yet for when the school will see the changes.

After the crash that killed Camden, the school district sent a letter to the county asking it to accelerate Brandon High's turn to receive the additional safety measures.

Bragg asked that donations for the family be coordinated through him by calling (813) 900-9817. He also asked that friends and well-wishers bring flowers to the memorial service.

when a person is struck and killed in a designated school xwalk in broad daylight in front of a school its not an accident. Flashing lights arent the answer. The driver was negligent and should be charged with vehicular homicide.
