Game vs. class: it's no contest

Gator football is king in Gainesville, but it seems not even a run for the national championship is enough to halt classes. The Jan. 8 game falls on the first day of the spring semester, and University of Florida officials say they won't cancel class. Here's a prediction: Jan. 8 will be one of the worst attendance days in UF history. And seeing how it's a night game, Jan. 9 could be a quiet day on campus, too.

Jam session will memorialize jazz host

Vic Hall was Tampa Bay's weekly voice for jazz for 47 years before giving up his volunteer gig at WUSF-FM 89.7 in summer 2005. His friends and fans are still mourning Hall, who died Nov. 21 at age 81. So on Saturday they will remember him in a way he would have loved: with some serious jamming. Led by bassist John Lamb, who played with Duke Ellington, the gathering will be at 2 p.m. at the Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. "Plans are loose, beyond a bar, a microphone for reminiscence and some players," said WUSF-FM jazz director Bob Seymour, "but I think it will be a memorable jam session."
