Pretend cop is arrested by the real thing

Michael McKean apparently picked the wrong car to tailgate while playing cop. The 43-year-old Seminole man and recently hired Pinellas County school bus driver outfitted a gold Buick with traffic equipment, a radar unit and in-car video camera, then tailgated an unmarked vehicle occupied by Sheriff's Office detectives Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. When a real sheriff's deputy pulled McKean over, he told detectives that he was a former police officer from Connecticut with a back injury that derailed his career. Turns out, he wasn't. McKean was arrested on five counts of drug possession and one count of unlawful installation of radar equipment. The school district placed him on paid administrative leave.

5th-grader charged with having knife

A Cannella Elementary fifth-grader was arrested Thursday morning after bragging to other children that he'd brought a knife to the Carrollwood-area school, officials said. The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office charged the 10-year-old with possession of a weapon on school grounds after he admitted to placing a 6-inch knife in another student's backpack, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. The knife was in a sheath, schools spokesman Steve Hegarty said. The 10-year-old was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center after his arrest.

Woman attacked at newspaper box

A 36-year-old Dunedin woman was sexually battered Wednesday night by a stranger who attacked her as she bought a newspaper. Police say the woman pulled her car over at E Rosary Road and Fay Avenue just before 10 p.m. Wednesday to buy a newspaper from a box. A stranger smelling of alcohol tackled her from behind and pulled her over a guardrail, where he sexually battered her. The attacker then fled and the victim got into her car and drove about a half a mile, when she sought help from a Sunstar ambulance at Keene Road and East Bay Drive. Police have no suspects and describe the attacker only as a white man between the ages of 20 and 40.

Ex-Lakeland officer accused of abuse

A former Lakeland firefighter and police officer had a sexual relationship with a teen girl, then recruited her friends to have sex while he watched, authorities said. David Lee Bishop of 5452 Pentail Circle performed sex acts with a 15-year-old girl, then encouraged her and four of her female friends to perform sex acts while he watched from a closet, according to the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office. On Nov. 30, one of the girls told her mother of the abuse, deputies say. Bishop was arrested on 12 counts, including sexual battery, lewd or lascivious battery, lewd or lascivious conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, jail records show. According to jail records, Bishop now works as an organ procurer for the Lifelink Foundation, a nonprofit organization for organ donation. He was held at the Orient Road Jail on Thursday morning without bail.
