For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

What's hot: Each year about this time, large concentrations of silver trout congregate on hard bottom areas off our gulf beaches. While many species become dormant with water temperatures in the low 60s, silvers thrive. What they lack in size, they make up for in numbers. They can be caught two at a time on tandem rigged jigs. The repetitive action of casting and "working" the artificials to make them appear natural helps novices hone their skills.
Tactics: Many areas are productive, with 12-17 feet off Redington Beach among the best. Muddy water scatters schools, so allow nearshore waters to clear. Large concentrations of trout can be picked up by a bottom recorder or schools of glass minnows on the surface can reveal their whereabouts. I start at swim buoys and drift until dialing in the heaviest bunches.
Tackle: Light spinning gear and 8- to 12-pound test work best. Tandem rigged jigs purchase at a store are hard to beat but make your own if you prefer. A pair of 3/32-ounce jig heads is the typical prepackaged version but slightly heavier can allow for longer casts and faster sinking. Experiment with your style and colors of soft tails.
