Girls Golf
Best of the Best
By TERRY JONES
Published December 13, 2006
Shena Yang, Wharton, Sophomore
Why we picked her: Yang maintained consistency throughout the season, scoring in the middle-to-high 30s and finishing with a nine-hole average of 38. Her 36-hole score of 144 was fifth at the Class 2A tournament and the top state score among Hillsborough County girls players. She also won the District 11 tournament and placed second at the Region 4 meet.
Most impressive accomplishment: Leading the Wildcats to their first state tournament appearance and placing fifth in the state as a sophomore.
College plans: Undecided. With two years of high school remaining, Yang has not made any permanent plans. A professional career is definitely a goal, but whether she pursues that dream before or after college depends on the next two years.
Did you know?: Unlike most young standout golfers, Yang does not spend her entire summers competing in the tough Florida youth circuit. She prefers spending that time with relatives in South Korea.
