Springstead emerges triumphant, unscathed
The Eagles nab a big district win in enemy territory, squeaking by Nature Coast.

BROOKSVILLE - After most high school basketball games, opposing fans rise from their seats and stroll casually to their awaiting vehicles.
After Nature Coast-Springstead basketball games, they are evacuated.
In the county's most hostile environment, with last year's post-game fight between the teams still fresh in everyone's mind, Springstead walked into Nature Coast's gym and emerged with the three things it had sought.
- A 61-57 overtime victory.
- Possession of first place in Class 4A, District 8.
- A big bull's-eye on its chest.
A raucous crowd in Nature Coast's fishbowl of a gym witnessed one of the more dramatic games in recent county history as Ethan Selph's driving layup with 26 seconds left in overtime silenced the home fans and electrified the Springstead contingent that made the cross-county trek.
With 10 second left, Eagles forward Jeff Haynes blocked a shot that was gobbled up by teammate Nehemiah Mason, who iced the game with two free throws.
Selph, a 6-foot-7 center who scored 15 points and blocked six shots, was one of three Eagles who finished in double figures. Mason led them with 17 points.
Nature Coast guard Joe Silvestri hit six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points, but Springstead's size and depth trumped the Sharks' frenetic four-guard attack.
After the game, sheriff's deputies coordinated the exit of fans, emptying the visitor's side before allowing Nature Coast fans to leave. Last January, the teams were involved in a post-game brawl that resulted in the suspensions of several players from both teams.
