Boys & Girls Clubs Christmas Camp: Registration is underway for the upcoming Christmas Camp at all three Boys & Girls Clubs of Citrus County locations (Inverness, Homosassa and Crystal River). Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 22 and Dec. 27-29. Cost is $40 for the first child with a discount for additional family members. Additional hours are 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Jan. 3-8. Boys & Girls Clubs KidSpark Program: The Boys & Girl Clubs of Citrus County will offer a new program called KidSpark. It will feature business and community leaders discussing choices for careers and hobbies. Programs may include arts and crafts, sewing, trade skills including carpentry, cabinet work, small engine repair, heating and air conditioning, and so on.

Businesses, clubs or organizations interested in participating are asked to call Robert DeSimone, AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer at 527-5960.

Free books for children: The Marion County Public Library Born to Read Program provides free books for ages infant to third grade. Children are asked to keep a monthly reading log to be turned in at the library. Each reading log is also included in a monthly drawing for prizes in four different age groups (baby, toddler, pre-school and K-3). Children who turn in a reading log every month and fill out a periodic questionnaire about the Born to Read Program will receive 15 new books per year. Reading logs may be picked up at any branch of the Marion County Public Library or printed from its website at http://library.marioncountyfl.org. Information is also available at the libraries. CFCC's Taste of Ocala: Central Florida Community College invites the community to its 50th anniversary at Taste of Ocala. "Happy 50th Birthday CFCC" is the theme for the scholarship fundraiser, which will be from noon to 4 p.m. April 15 at the Ocala campus, 3001 SW College Road, directly across from Paddock Mall. KidzArt winter camp: Citrus County Parks and Recreation along with KidzArt instructor Jennifer Barber will offer a winter camp for children in kindergarten through fifth grade during the holiday break.

The camp will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 2-5 at the Lecanto Community Building. The cost is $60 per child for the week or $20 per child per day. The instructor will supply all materials. A snack and drink will also be provided.

Elks Americanism contest: The Inverness Elks Lodge 2522 announces an essay contest in two divisions for area fifth- and sixth-graders and seventh- and eight-graders. The theme is "Why I Am Proud To Be An American."

Essays must be typed or legibly printed in ink, not to exceed 250 words. Participants must include name, grade, school and the sponsoring Elks Lodge on the essays. Prizes include a $100 U.S. Savings Bond for first place, $75 bond for second and $50 bond for third. Mail entries to Inverness Elks Lodge 2522, P.O. Box 840, Hernando, FL, 34442. Deadline is Jan. 12. Little League registration: The Inverness Little League is accepting players for the 2007 softball and baseball season. Registration dates and places are:

- 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 6, Inverness Middle School.

- 6-8 p.m. Jan. 11, Inverness Middle School.

- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 13, Inverness Middle School.

Tryout dates will be:

- 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Jan. 20, Whispering Pines Park.

- 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Jan. 27, Whispering Pines Park.

All players need their original birth certificates and proof of residence. Anyone interested in being a manager, coach or volunteer must fill out a volunteer form during registration times or through a Little League Board member before Dec. 9.
