A motorcyclist from New Port Richey died early Wednesday after losing control on East Lake Road and hitting a storm drain, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Richard A. Drake, 34, of Markham Street, was going north on East Lake Road about 1:18 a.m. when his 2005 Suzuki veered onto the grass shoulder for reasons investigators haven't determined. Drake, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle when it struck a storm drain near Keystone Road, the highway patrol said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crescent Oaks gets okay for signal

It's been a long fight for residents of the Crescent Oaks subdivision, but Tuesday night the Pinellas County Commission granted them a traffic signal for the intersection of East Lake Road and Crescent Oaks Boulevard, just south of the Pinellas-Pasco county line. The 4-3 vote in favor of granting the light came despite county engineers who said none was needed. But residents had lobbied hard and were able to win the day. One catch: The county will let a signal be placed at the intersection, but Crescent Oaks residents will have to pay for the light and its maintenance.
