Man to serve 5-year term for fiery assault

A man who battered but did not try to kill his former girlfriend last year will spend at least the next five years in prison, a judge ruled Wednesday. Willie Andre Haynes, 38, stood trial last month accused of stabbing Catina Washington with a screwdriver during a September 2005 fight, beating her with a board and setting her on fire. But Washington, 34, was an uncooperative and reluctant witness. Jurors found Haynes guilty Nov. 30 of the lesser charge of aggravated battery and acquitted him of arson.

FDLE says man shared child porn

State investigators arrested a 28-year-old Tampa man Wednesday morning, accusing him of downloading and sharing pornographic photographs of children over the Internet, jail records show. Lavelle Cunningham of 10111 Chimney Hill Court faces six counts of possession of child pornography, jail records show. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested Cunningham after a monthlong undercover investigation, said FDLE spokeswoman Trena Reddick. Investigators say Cunningham used his personal computer to distribute child pornography through a file-sharing program. He was booked into the Hillsborough County jail at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday, where he was held on $12,000 bail.

Church reports theft of $1,000

A day after Sunday services, someone snatched money from the offering plate at Fort Cooper Baptist Church on U.S. 41 S. Authorities said more than $1,000 in cash was reported stolen Monday morning from the church and the adjacent Inverness Christian Academy. Gail Tierney, a spokeswoman for the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, said the money was taken from different locations in the church.

Pasco man dies in motorcycle wreck

A motorcyclist from New Port Richey died early Wednesday morning after losing control on East Lake Road and hitting a storm drain, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Richard A. Drake, 34, was going north on East Lake Road about 1:18 a.m. when his 2005 Suzuki GSX 1300 R veered onto the grass shoulder for undetermined reasons. Drake, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle when it struck a storm drain near Keystone Road, the Highway Patrol said.

Driver survives crash on I-275

A man was in fair condition early Wednesday after he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and crashed on Interstate 275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Authorities said Christopher S. McCarty, 38, of 8469 N Himes Ave. was driving south near Dale Mabry Highway about 1:55 a.m. Wednesday when he lost control of his 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, swerved across several lanes, entered the median, struck a concrete barrier and overturned. McCarty was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected.
