Your bone marrow could save his life

Published December 17, 2006

A drive to recruit potential bone marrow donors is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 13225 118th St. The drive is being organized to help patients like Joseph Grimsley, a Largo man who suffers from acute myelogenous leukemia, a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. African-Americans represent only 10 percent of the more than 6-million people on the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Getting on the donor list has become almost painless in recent years. A swab of the inside of the cheek is taken, and the processed DNA is put on a list. If a match is generated, the potential donor would go for further testing to ensure a genetically compatible match. To learn more about the drive, call the church at (727) 585-9080 or Ethel Grimsley at (727) 539-1566.

City takes control of two major roads

Largo now has jurisdiction over two key streets in its downtown core: Clearwater-Largo Road and West Bay Drive. The Florida Department of Transportation transferred authority to the city last month. Largo has control over Clearwater-Largo Road from Ponce de Leon Boulevard to West Bay Drive and West Bay Drive from Clearwater-Largo Road to Seminole Boulevard/Missouri Avenue. As a result, the city, which recently began its Clearwater-Largo Road streetscaping project, no longer needs permits from the DOT for work performed within the rights of way on those streets.
