Set the alarm clock early Tuesday morning.

Barring a weather problem, the cranes are coming home. The 18 whooping cranes in the “Class of 2006” were flying to Gilchrist County this morning from Hamilton County, according to Liz Condie of Operation Migration. That means the annual flyover public event at the Dunnellon/Marion County Airport is tentatively slated for Tuesday morning.

Those who want to view the cranes as they fly behind ultralight aircraft should report to the airport by 7:30 a.m. The airport is on County Road 484 west of State Road 200 at SW 147th Court.

After the ultralights fly past the airport and drop the birds off in the nearby Halpata Tastanaki Preserve, the pilots will return to the airport to talk to the public about the flight.

As always, a word of caution: The plan can always change because of weather.

What a complete waste of money. You have people living in the woods starving, and you are flying another bunch of birds down?!
