In the newly elected senate, how many states have one Democratic and one Republican senator?

Fifteen states will have one Democratic and one Republican senator when the new Congress convenes in January. Eighteen states will have two Democrats, and 17 states will be served by two Republicans. Sens. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont are independents who are included in the Democratic total because they typically vote with that party. The fate of Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., who had brain surgery last week, could affect control of the Senate.
