Checkpoint this weekend aims to cut crashes

Sheriff's deputies will conduct a safety checkpoint Friday and Saturday as part of an increased effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes this holiday season. The checkpoint will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and end at 3 a.m. Saturday at U.S. 19 and West Veterans Drive, just south of Crystal River.

Conservationists to meet Thursday

TOOFAR will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the East Citrus Community Center, 9907 E Gulf to Lake Highway (State Road 44 E). Guest speaker will be Gary Maidhof, director of Development Services for Citrus County. The public is invited. Light refreshments will be served before the meeting; donations are appreciated. For information, call the office at 726-5004 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.

Board to look at land code proposal

The Planning and Development Review Board will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday in Room 166 of the Lecanto Government Building, 3600 W Sovereign Path. Among the items up for review: proposed revisions to the Land Development Code's standards concerning mining areas and vegetative debris facilities.

Museum to close Monday, Tuesday

The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, 1 Courthouse Square, will be closed Monday and Tuesday in observance of the Christmas holiday. The museum reopens at 10 a.m. Dec. 27. Call 341-6429.

Kids can learn about career paths

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Citrus County is offering a new program called KidSpark. It features business and community leaders discussing choices for careers and hobbies. Programs may include arts and crafts; sewing; and trade skills such as carpentry, cabinetmaking, small engine repair, and heating and air-conditioning. Businesses, clubs or organizations interested in participating are asked to call Robert DeSimone, AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer, at 527-5960.
