Rhea Van Gelder, daughter of Luba Brosilow, was born Dec. 24, 1906, in Kiev, Russia.

Van Gelder, one of five children, immigrated to the United States with her family in 1907 to escape Nicholas II, the ruling czar of the Romanov dynasty.

On Aug. 29, 1936, she met and married Sylvester Van Gelder in Chicago. Later they spent their honeymoon traveling across Mackinac Island and around Lake Michigan.

She was in the Signal Corps during World War II and worked as an elections judge in Illinois. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters.

Van Gelder moved to the area from Park Forest, Ill., in 1980. She enjoys reading books and watching movies.

Van Gelder has a son, Larry; two grandchildren, Doug and Michelle; and three great-grandchildren, Shea, Rebecca and Zachary.
