The National Association for Multicultural Education has selected Pinellas County Schools' Principal's Multicultural Advisory Committee program as its 2006 Rose Duson-Sells Multicultural Program Award winner. The annual award goes to programs that: have a mission that reflects the multiple facets of diversity; meet the needs of a diverse population; offer curriculum that responds to the diversity of our nation and prepares students for an active role in a democratic society; foster connections among home, school and the community; and have documented results with the larger educational community. Grant helps retrofit 176 school buses The Pinellas County School District has received a $150,000 Clean School Bus USA grant that will allow 176 older school buses to be retrofitted to reduce emissions. The funding also will pay for training for school bus drivers to reduce emissions from idling. The purpose is to lessen children's exposure to diesel exhaust and air pollution created by diesel school buses. The Pinellas County School District was one of 37 districts nationwide to receive part of the $7.5-million in available funding. The project is a joint venture with Pinellas' Department of Environmental Management and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Pinellas County government matched the federal grant with $150,000.
