Contests offer a world of challenges

One more day and it's officially winter break for Pasco County students. For many, the winter vacation will be jam-packed with plenty of things to do. But those having some spare time might want to venture into their innovative side to fill some of those idle hours.

So go ahead and check out some of the upcoming opportunities listed below.

- Jan. 12 is the deadline to enter the Thursday Musicale Scholarship, open to Pasco County high school seniors who plan to enter an accredited college or university to study music. Entrants must fill out an application and be able to perform at the Thursday Musicale Concert on March 7. - The Florida Association for Home and Community Education is looking for some creative new recipes for the 2007 Kumquat Festival Recipe Contest. The contest is open to those 8 and older. A completed entry form with the recipe must be received by 5 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Pasco County Extension Office, 36702 State Road 52, Dade City, FL 33525-5198. The finished product must be received between noon and 1 p.m. Jan. 19. For information, call (727) 847-8177, ext. 4288.

- The Art of Recycling Art Competition is for students in grades 9 through 12. Artwork is judged and exhibited in the West Pasco Government Center in February. The artwork must have an environmental theme and utilize 70 percent recycled materials. Dropoff is from 2 to 6 p.m. Jan. 19 and 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at the West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road, New Port Richey. For information, call the Pasco Arts Council before Dec. 23 or after Jan. 1 at (727) 817-0952.

- Pasco Education Foundation Scholarships are available for high school seniors attending Pasco County schools. Apply online at www.pascoeducationfoundation.org. Deadline is Jan. 31.

- The Trash to Treasure Contest is open to youngsters in pre-K through Grade 8 who submit works of art featuring recyclable or recycled materials. Entries should be submitted by Feb. 2 to the Extension Office at the Pasco County Fairgrounds, 36702 State Road 52, Dade City, FL 33525-5198. - The "I Love My Library Bookmark Contest" is open to elementary school-aged children who design a brightly colored bookmark with the theme, "I Love My Library." Winner receives a $100 savings bond. Entry forms may be picked up at any Pasco County Library. Deadline is Feb. 5.

- My Parks Photography Contest is for students ages 13 to 25 (parental approval required for students under 18). My Parks also sponsors a scholarship contest for high school and college students. For information, rules and entry forms, visit www.myparkphotos.org.
