  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

With maturity comes perfection

Brandon Derry of Lane Glo Lanes North is relatively young when it comes to competing outside the junior leagues. He has had his share of accomplishments on the lanes over the years with a 290, 297 and 298, but had never reached the top of that proverbial mountain until recently.

In the Friday Night Foursome League at Lane Glo North in Port Richey, Derry shot his first career perfect game. He has competed in sanctioned leagues up and down the North Suncoast over the past five years, but the accomplishment came in his first year at that particular center.

He also bowls at Countryside Lanes in Clearwater. Last season, he bowled at both Countryside, where he averaged a 206, and Leisure Lanes in Port Richey, where he averaged 193.

His last U.S. Bowling Congress achievement came in August when he tossed a 290 at Mariner Lanes in Spring Hill during the center's Monday Night Singles League.

MARTIN'S DOUBLE TAKE: For the second time in less than a month, Mike Martin has thrown a perfect game at Hudson Bowl.

On Nov. 24 during the Thanksgiving Scratch Marathon Tournament, Martin threw one of two perfect games. The 300 was his first since April 2005 and his fourth overall.

Almost two weeks ago, Martin threw perfect game No. 5 during the Hammer Classic League. With games of 211 and 233, he totaled a 744 series.

He averaged a 204 while competing at Spring Hill Lanes and Hudson last season. This season he competes exclusively at Hudson in the Hammer Classic and Hammer High Rollers leagues.

OVER/UNDER 55 TOURNEY: The results of the monthly Over/Under 55 Doubles Tournament at Hudson Bowl are in.

The duo of Melanie O'Grady, arguably the best female bowler on the North Suncoast, and Don Hetman snagged $240 after totaling 2,358 pins over five games.

Coming in second was the tandem of Josh Rabelo and Bill Smith with 2319 pins. Third belonged to Dan Sellers and Ed Duer with 2,206.

Next month's Over/Under 55 Doubles Tournament is scheduled for Jan. 7.

UPCOMING TOURNEY: Lane Glo Lanes North is hosting its End-Of-The-Year New Year's Eve Handicap Singles Tournament.

An entry fee of $30 per bowler is due before Saturday. To enter after that date, a $10 late fee will be assessed.

The first-place prize of $300 is guaranteed regardless of the amount of participants. Scheduled kickoff time for the tournament is at noon Dec. 31.
