For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Lakewood's Jazmyn Shorter wanted to go to a school that not only was competitive in track, but one that had an outstanding and well-deserved reputation for academics.
She found that at Kentucky.
Shorter, the Times' 2005 county track athlete of the year, spared herself and her family the barrage of recruiters' calls by committing to the Wildcats.
"It was the first school I visited," Shorter said. "I just liked the whole program."
Shorter then called all the jilted suitors to break the news. Among the schools she turned down were Florida State and Texas Christian.
At last year's Class 3A state meet, Shorter got the attention of college recruiters by winning the 400 meters in a personal-best 55.04 seconds.
FACA ALL-STARS: Countryside's A.J. Mathews, East Lake's Brent Hill and Will Sloat and Tarpon Spring's Marquise Gamble were selected to play for the South in Saturday's Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South all-star football game.
Admission for the game, held at Bryant Stadium, is $10. The North team will be coached by John Maronto of Daytona Beach Mainland, while the South will be coached by Byron Walker of Plantation American Heritage.
Countryside's L.D. Crow was selected to play but opted out after breaking his jaw on the last play of the county all-star game two weeks ago. Crow's mouth is wired shut for the next six weeks and the injury forced him to postpone his visit to Stanford until January.
SOLDOUT SHOWDOWN: The Gibbs-Lakewood boys basketball game set for Friday night is sold out. No tickets will be available at Lakewood the day of the game.
