Nielsen Media layoffs could hit Oldsmar

OLDSMAR - Nielsen Media Research remains king of TV ratings, but pink slips could arrive next year at its sprawling Pinellas County campus.

Parent company VNU has announced a 2007 restructuring that will include laying off up to 4,000 of its 42,000 employees. While VNU hasn't confirmed any cuts at Nielsen's 615,000-square-foot complex, where about 1,800 people work, it hasn't taken Oldsmar off the table either.

"It's not going to be focused in one area, location or business," spokesman Jack Loftus said.

Nielsen Media's revenue rose 13.8 percent in the first nine months of this year, more than twice the overall company's revenue growth of 6.2 percent.

VNU fell under new management this year when five private equity firms bought the Dutch conglomerate for $9.8-billion.
