Chocachatti Elementary offers "Families Building Better Readers," a free reading workshop for parents and students in kindergarten through third grade.

The event is Jan. 18 at the school and starts with a free dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free child care for children ages 3 to 4. Call 797-7070, ext. 435.

Students count steps to Iraq

Also at Chocachatti, the P.E. classes have found a way to encourage fitness and honor U.S. troops at war.

Students are tracking the numbers of steps they walk or run, creating an imaginary trail to Iraq so they can feel connected to U.S. soldiers.

Arts Festival today at Pine Grove

Pine Grove Elementary hosts its third annual Special Arts Festival today. Community volunteers set up more than 60 tables on the athletic field, where students can drop by and learn to create decorative or gift items to take home.

Hernando High concert tonight

Hernando High School's Band and Chorus Christmas concert is tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Call Joe Harrin at 797-7015.

Senior is drum corps alternate

Hernando High senior Alyssa Maternowski, 17, earned an alternate spot with the Boston Crusaders, a world-renowned drum corps.

The award-winning musician competed against 300 others.

"Most often, the alternates get performance spots before the summer tour in June," said Alyssa's mother, Michelle Maternowski.

"We're hoping that happens for Alyssa. We're really proud." Alyssa, who music director Joe Harrin called "one of the best to come out of Hernando County," plays mellophone, similar to a French horn. She hopes to someday join the Boston Symphony.

Students can apply for scholarship

High school seniors can now receive applications for the Most Valuable Student Scholarship offered by the Elks National Foundation.

Applications for the program and the Legacy Awards can be obtained at any Elks lodge. Students can also check with their guidance counselors or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 Lakeview Ave., Chicago, IL 60614-1889.
