An old car dealership is selected to rev up Iorio's campaign

Mayor Pam Iorio is gearing up for the city elections in March. Her campaign headquarters will be in an old car dealership in space donated by Jim Ferman, who at one point led the fundraising drive for a new Tampa Museum of Art. Attorney Frank Fleischer will head Iorio's finance committee, and longtime supporter Fran Davin will develop strategy. Davin worked on Iorio's 2003 campaign, then went to work for the mayor in what was supposed to be a six-month job. Davin stayed for more than three years, leaving the part-time, $70,000-a-year position in December, just weeks before the filing deadline for the mayor's race. Kay Manzell will run the campaign headquarters. Manzell was campaign coordinator for Iorio's run for the Hillsborough County Commission more than 20 years ago and also worked on Iorio's 2003 campaign. Castor names aides Newly elected U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor has put together her District 11 office team. The office director is Chloe Coney. In May, Coney resigned from her job as president and chief executive officer of the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa, an organization she created 15 years ago, to run for the Hillsborough County Commission. City Council member Kevin White beat her in the Democratic primary. Gershom Faulkner, a longtime legislative aide to Democratic state Rep. Frank Peterman, and Pat Kemp, Castor's legislative aide at the Hillsborough County Commission, will serve as outreach directors. Castor named Agustina Guerrero as her press secretary. Guerrero works as a reporter at Tampa Bay Business Journal and hosts two programs on Bay News 9 En Espanol. Some education irony Isn't this interesting: Nearly five years ago, newly appointed University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft forced USF St. Petersburg dean Bill Heller to resign so she could hire her own person for the post. In November, Heller was elected to the state House of Representatives in District 52. He's now the ranking Democratic member of the House Committee on Postsecondary Education.
