  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

Apply for magnet schools now

Parents have until Jan. 26 to apply for placement in magnet schools. Under Hillsborough Choice, students can apply for a magnet school or another school with available space within Hillsborough County.

The School Board mailed school choice applications to students' homes in mid November. You can also get an application online at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/choice or call the Choice Information Line, 272-4692.

Reservoir parcels to be burned

Tampa Bay Water will do a series of controlled fires at the C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir through February.

The fires remove nuisance plants and reduce the potential for wildfires, according to Tampa Bay Water.

The parcels slated for controlled burns are on the West Pruitt mitigation area west of the reservoir, east of Hobson-Simmons Road and south of Boyette Road.

BRANDON

Area surgeon is physician of year

Brandon Regional Hospital recently named thoracic surgeon Dr. Palanisamy Rathinasamy its physician of the year.

Known as "Dr. Samy," he's a 21-year veteran of Brandon Regional and moved to the United States from India in 1977. He completed his residency program at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. and went on to complete a fellowship in peripheral vascular surgery at Winthrop University Hospital in Long Island, N.Y. Peers describe Rathinasamy as knowledgeable, dedicated and kind. He and his wife, Mathy, live in Valrico.

Hospital names new director

Brandon Regional in late November named Deborah Johansen the director of medical inpatient units, a new position.

Johansen has served for nearly two years as a clinical nurse manager at the hospital's critical care unit. Before coming to Brandon Regional, Johansen was the surgical unit coordinator at Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg. Johansen's arrival coincides with a surgical floor expected to open early in January. The Spine Care Center will add 30 private rooms and 10 intensive-care beds, bringing the hospital's total to 367 beds.

RIVERVIEW

Scouts need help with cookies

The Girl Scouts need adult mentors to help troops complete the cookie drive that starts in January. The Suncoast Council, which comprises Hillsborough, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas counties, is launching a mentorship program to reach girls who do not have enough volunteer leaders.

The cookie drive produces revenue for Girl Scout troops. Scouts in the Suncoast Council sold 1.5-million boxes early in 2006, said spokeswoman Kelly Lynn. The boxes sell for $3.50 each. The money helps keep four Girl Scout camps running, including Camp Dorothy Thomas in Riverview.

The rest goes to individual troops.

But the organization needs leadership to help Girl Scouts in its Innovative Delivery programs. These programs are drawn from homeless shelters, migrant communities and after-school programs, and often lack adult volunteers.

Paid Suncoast Council staffers keep the troops going, but they are stretched thin.

A mentor can be male or female, Lynn said. They help girls plan and organize the cookie sale, which teaches money management, goal setting and other life skills.

The girls might go in pairs door to door accompanied by an adult, or set up booths at public events.

This is the first year that the Suncoast Council is using mentors to help organize cookie sales. For more information, call Rhondalisha Collins, 281-4475, ext. 203; or 1-800-881-4475, ext. 203.
