The It List: Tree of Light Metaphysical Awareness and Worship Center

Apart from a mural of cherubs and rocks, few signs point to a connection with The Other World. That's the style of psychic counselor Irene Dryer, who runs the Tree of Light Metaphysical Awareness and Worship Center out of her home at 209 Elrod Drive in Brandon.

No crystal balls. No incense. No prayers to begin the reading.

One candle with three wicks burns on a card table with a plastic covering.

She offers advice in a string of apparent non sequiturs. Pay attention to odd details, no matter how inconsequential. One of them will come in handy soon.

Rent a go-cart. Take cooking lessons. Keep a plant. Forgive people.

Dryer describes herself as "ridiculously" organized. She hates to see misspellings in print. She decided 15 years ago to end her life as a "happy housewife" and opened a floral shop in Brandon.

She says she has no use for depression.

"Been there, done that. Didn't like it," she explains.

She hopes attendance at the Tree of Light, which meets Thursdays and Sundays at 7 p.m., will pick up again soon. She doesn't charge for readings but visitors can make donations.

In an hour, Dryer says little that couldn't be found in a self-help book. But there is a cumulative weight, and a hint from somewhere that there's a reason she's saying exactly these things now.

"When you are presented with a new idea, you don't either have to accept it or reject it. There's this little 'maybe' shelf up there. And you can stick it up there and take it out every once in awhile and say, 'How do I feel about this now?' "

You know IT when you find IT: It's something unique, something out of the way, something you could find only at one place in the Brandon and South Shore area. Send your picks, finds and hidden treasures to brandon@sptimes.com.
