Puppies survive alone in shed

TAMPA - The puppies barely made any noise when they were discovered in a dark garage. Two were alive. One could barely walk.

But the little black and brown dogs, who county officials have named Holly and Noel, might have been the lucky ones of their litter.

At least two others, possibly three, had died. Their carcasses became nourishment for neglected and starving dogs that still survived, Hillsborough County Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.

Deputies say Jose Luis Martinez, 47, put the dogs in the shed when his property manager told him he couldn't keep them at his apartment, 13727 Susan Kay Drive, Unit C, in Tampa.

Ryan said they think the 11- to 12-week-old pups, lived in the shed for three to four weeks without any attention. Bones and teeth of dead dogs were found inside.

Martinez, who was a maintenance worker for CPN Property, had access to a shed the company used for storage at 15902 W Lake Burrell Drive, not far from where he lived.

Carolyn Miller, 56, lives a few feet from the shed and was stunned at the discovery Wednesday evening by another maintenance worker.

"I never heard any dogs in there," she said. "If I'd known they were in there, they wouldn't have been in there."

Angel Figueroa, 27, the maintenance worker who worked with Martinez, said he opened the shed's side door, smelled decay, opened a door on the front and saw the puppies.

As they waited for Animal Services to arrive, Miller, a diabetic, and her daughters fed the dogs water through her syringes, since the puppies at first rejected it. They soaked dog food to make it more edible to the weak puppies.

Martinez was being held at Orient Road Jail on $6,000 bail Thursday night, charged with three counts of cruelty to animals.

I'm a TRUE animal lover and deeply feel that if it were put into effect that people would receive the same treatment that they give to animals,...they may think twice before they harm them in any way. Make it a public payback and better yet.

How about 3 weeks in the shed in same conditions for Martinez, much cheaper and more approprate than putting him through the legal system,in England he would probably get a payoff saying arresting him breached his human rights under B,liars government

And to think he is being fed, given water, kept warm and our tax dollars are paying for him to be kept comfortable and safe from all the pissed off people while those little puppies are struggling for their lives. Go figure. Is Bondi prosecuting him?

He should receive the same punishment, a cold hearted low life.

This many is obviously a low life jerk . Please let us know when the puppies find a forever home.

I will adopt one or both! I can take human suffering all day but cruelty to animals? I need to get hold of this guy for just 30 seconds. REBECCA.. are they now off to a good home? Am I too late?

thankyou for this sad story during the holiday... hopefully it will awaken the compassion in all of us for God's creatures.

I agree, take away his food and water and put him in a room with no ventilation. I hate the way our system works. He will be left go with only a slap on the wrist. Thank God the rest of us, cherish our beloved pets.

by Lisa 12/22/06 11:17 AM
Why are so many people being cruel to animals? I am so sick of these people.
by Peter 12/22/06 11:00 AM
Put him in the same shed for 3-4 weeks with no food just a little water
by MR 12/22/06 10:49 AM
He should be treated the same way!!! Lock him up and not feed him for weeks...see how he likes it. And of course he will be a free man and continue to abuse animals and humans for all we know.
by Beverly 12/22/06 09:32 AM
May this man rot in Hell.
by Jackie 12/22/06 09:30 AM
He should be charged with murder and attempted murder. I am fed up with people that mistreat animals, its a privelge to be able to care for them.
by Jessica 12/22/06 09:24 AM
What is wrong with people? He could have taken them to any number of cpounty facililites....crimes against children and animals are horrible
by Ashley 12/22/06 09:23 AM
I hope that jerk serves time in jail and the guards "forget" to feed him or give him water or check on him. People like that guy make me sick.
by Mari 12/22/06 09:07 AM
This story is horrible. What kind of person would do that to animals????? Unbelievable.
by paul 12/22/06 08:59 AM
