  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Maybe you can tear up that ticket

Good news for anyone who got a speeding ticket on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg. A man cited for speeding in a 15 mph zone persuaded a judge to toss it, city officials said, because state law prohibits speed limits that low without a detailed study. No study was done, so police are no longer enforcing the 15 mph limit and the city plans to replace the signs. The new speed limit: 20 mph.

A double dog care plea

Wanted: A new home for two orphaned chow chow mixes, ages 11 and 9. Bear and Buddy were living happily in Lithia until their elderly owner died before Thanksgiving. For two weeks the dogs - mother and son - survived on food from a neighbor. The dogs arrived at the Hillsborough Animal Services shelter Dec. 3 with burrs and bugs. But they were previously well treated, have since visited a dog spa and come with vaccinations and microchips. For more information, call (813) 744-5660.

Zoo admission may go up

It may soon cost more to gawk at the animals at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. Officials of the zoo want to boost the price of admission by $2, to $16.95 for adults and $12.95 for children. The Museum of Science and Industry charges $19.95 for adults, and the Florida Aquarium charges $17.95. Because the zoo is on city land, the Tampa City Council must approve the increase, which is scheduled Jan. 11.

Dig out more change, Crosstown users

Happy New Year, commuters: Tolls on the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway in Hillsborough County will go up Jan. 1. Most go up 25 cents: $1.75 (a 50-cent increase) at East Plaza, $1.25 at West Plaza, $1 at 50th and 39th streets and Willow Avenue, and 75 cents at Plant Avenue and 22nd Street. SunPass users will pay 25 cents less in all cases. The 75-cent toll at 22nd Street stays the same. Higher tolls will help pay for the rebuilding of the expressway's upper deck after a 2004 collapse.
