High Fives

Rita Mirabilo is the artist of the month for December at the West Hernando Branch Library in Spring Hill. Her bright acrylic paintings reflect her love of travel and nature. Included are scenes from Yellowstone and the Seven Sisters along with wildlife studies.

Mirabilo renewed a lifelong interest in art when she retired to Florida seven years ago and became an active member of the Spring Hill Art League. Her work was displayed in the league's recent Fall Harvest Art Festival.

Clubs and Organizations

The Hispanic Scholarship Civic and Cultural Foundation recently held its annual Fall Fashion Show, Spanish Dinner and Entertainment fundraiser at the Lake House in Spring Hill.

Fashions were provided by Belk Department Store; hair designs by Shirley Madera, owner of Salon Hair Candy; makeovers by Joanna Martinez, beauty consultant; and music by DJ Willy Matos.

Models participating in the fashion show included: Justin Cotto, Praxedis D'Agrella, Shaizey Beach, Dennis McGeehan, Orlando D'Agrella, Angelica Rivera, Wendy Nugent, Maeghan Elkins, Gino Ortiz, Katia Valdeos and Dennis Cotto.

Sponsors for the event included The Lake House, Office Depot-Tim Reiter, Rachel Fahrubel, Salon Hair Candy, Joanna Martinez and Willy Matos.

The Hernando County Public Library System has received a special donation from the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill and Wal-Mart Supercenter on Commercial Way in Spring Hill.

The club recently invited Kathy Scanland, manager of the Wal-Mart, and Stacey Leggett, of the Hernando County Library System, to a recent lunch meeting at The Lake House on Kenlake Avenue in Spring Hill.

During the meeting, Michael Jackson, immediate past president; Al Johnson, president, and Scanland, presented a check for $4,500 to Leggett.

The donation will fund the purchase of five laptop computers with integrated wireless Internet access and a charging stand for the Teen Room at the Spring Hill Branch Library.

The laptop computers will support afterschool tutoring and homework help in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill.

Janie Wiley, event chairwoman of Brooksville's American Cancer Society's 2006 Relay for Life and Camille Padula, team development chairwoman, recently announced that Brooksville was recognized for the Pacesetter Award, 2006-07, during the American Cancer Society, Florida Division, 2006 Relay for Life Team Development Summit in Orlando.

This was the first for Brooksville and the recognition has stirred up even more enthusiasm and determination to make this a most successful event.
