Track, field rec teams register through Jan. 5

Youths ages 5 through 18 can register for Largo's track and field teams to compete against Clearwater, Dunedin and Safety Harbor. The season is from Jan. 10 to April 25, and events meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Largo High School, 410 Missouri Ave. The cost to participate is $25 a month for residents and $32.50 for non-residents. Registration lasts through Jan. 5 and includes a T-shirt, three practices and one meet. Call the city recreation department at 587-6775 or 587-6720. Mingling group meets monthly The Largo Mid-Pinellas Chamber of Commerce will have its monthly "Coffee An'Networking" from 8 to 9 a.m. Jan. 4 at Beef O'Brady's, 841 West Bay Drive in the Pinellas shopping center. Learn the story of a Civil War ship Enjoy a potluck dinner at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, 455 Scotland St., and hear the story of how a crew sponsored by Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa found the wreck of the Civil War ship SS Republic off the coast of Savannah, Ga., with millions of dollars in gold and silver coins. David Fisher of Odyssey Marine will describe how the crew discovered the ship upright in 1,700 feet of water in 2003. The ship sank in 1865 on its way to New Orleans with goods, gold and silver to help restore the economy of the South. All are welcome to attend. County holds two business seminars The Pinellas County Economic Development Center will hold two workshops this week to help small business owners. The first, on how to start a business, is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the EpiCenter, 13805 58th St. N, Clearwater, in the ICOT Business Center. Learn how to obtain licenses and permits and how to conduct feasibility studies. Determine your requirements for working capital and creating business plans. In the second, from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday Lunelle Siegel of Alliance Financial Capital shares her advice on financing, and Robert Chavaria from the U.S. Small Business Administration will provide an overview of SBA programs and services, including loan and guarantee programs. Get moving at Brooker Creek Looking for some exercise over the holidays? Visit the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road, pick up a trail guide, then walk out on the boardwalk to the trails. The preserve also is offering some guided hikes. There's a night hike from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for children 10 to adults. Then from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, center staff and volunteers will lead a hike for children 6 to adults. The hikes are free, but advance registration is required. Call (727) 453-6800.
