ST. PETERSBURG - A Riverview man was killed Sunday morning when a pickup driven by his brother flipped into a retention pond just north of Roosevelt Boulevard.

The driver and two other passengers survived the crash. But Jose Luis G. Navarrete, 27, drowned before St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue could pull him from the truck, which was upside down in 3 or 4 feet of water.

Just before 9:40 a.m., driver Tomas Navarrete, 26, was getting off northbound Interstate 275 and merging onto Roosevelt Boulevard.

The road was wet, and the driver lost control of the 2002 silver Toyota pickup, which spun twice and flipped twice before landing in the pond, authorities said.

Dionicio O. Hernandez got out of the truck on his own.

Fire & Rescue arrived by 9:43 a.m., pried the doors open and pulled out Tomas Navarrete and passenger Eddie Luna within 13 minutes, fire Lt. Rick Feinberg said.

Jose Navarrete, who was in the front seat, was pulled from the truck unconscious at 10:08 a.m.

The survivors were taken to Bayfront Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

The crash was still under investigation Sunday evening.
