  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

DEAR FAITHFUL READERS: This is the time of year I love most because I can personally thank you for your many letters and sewing tips. I read every one and wish I could use them all. I try to keep you posted on the newest sewing techniques, patterns and trends, but I need your help. Please drop me a short note and tell me what you would like to see in Sew Simple. I'd like to be your lifeline in sewing. I want you to be successful!

New look for evening

Q: Can you suggest an alternative top to wear with pants or skirts? I would like a dressier pattern that I can wear for most evening functions.

A: Why not try something different and the latest fashion? Vogue 8120, sized 6-22, is a top worn over a skirt or pants instead of tucked in. The pattern includes a more tailored one with a collar, and one that's collarless with three-quarter-length sleeves. I don't recommend this pattern if you have a large bust; it would have a tendency to gape open at the bustline.

This week's winner

Each week, a reader wins a prize for

sending in a helpful sewing hint. This week's winner is Dorothy Hodgens of Conyers, Ga. She will receive a collection of 100 hand-sewing needles from England. Her tip:

"I always wash my fabrics before using them. If both sides are very similar, it is difficult to see the right or wrong side. I pin a safety pin on the selvage of the right side of the fabric. No more mistakes!"

Send your sewing tips to Eunice Farmer, Box 31729, St. Louis, MO 63131, or info@eunice farmerfabrics.com. If she selects it for publication, you'll receive this prize.

Eunice Farmer is a nationally re-cognized authority on sewing. She owns a fabric boutique and sewing school. Send questions and comments to info@eunicefarmerfabrics.com.
