Car hits pole, cuts power; no one hurt

A car crashed into a power feeder pole at Plaza Street and Pennsylvania Avenue just north of downtown Wednesday morning, leaving a large swath of Clearwater without electricity for two hours. The car hit the pole just before 7 a.m., knocking out power to about 2,700 customers in western Clearwater, Clearwater Beach and Sand Key, Progress Energy spokeswoman Cheri Jacobs said. Traffic signals in the area were also not functioning during the blackout. Feeder poles generally serve a wide range of customers, Jacobs said. Although the power pole was knocked over, the accident itself caused no serious injuries, police said.
