Battlefield re-enactment this weekend
By TIMES STAFF
Published December 28, 2006
For the 26th year, people are expected to come from all over the country this weekend to re-enact the first battle of the Second Seminole War, which began on Dec. 28, 1835. The event will include period merchants, food and craft vendors and a narrative museum. Artisans, including soapmakers and blacksmiths, will demonstrate arts and crafts of that time period. The re-enactment is produced and organized by the Dade Battlefield Society Inc., a volunteer, nonprofit organization. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, outside Bushnell off Highway 476, between I-75 and U.S. 301. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-12. Gates open at 9 a.m.; battle re-enactment takes place at 2 p.m. each day. For more information, contact park manager Tracey L. Standridge at (352) 793-4781 or Dade Battlefield Society president Jean McNary at (352) 567-2596. Woman's screams repel home invader A 75-year-old woman suffered a minor injury during an attempted home invasion Tuesday evening, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. The woman told deputies that she answered the door at her mobile home and saw a white man with light brown or blond hair and a black stocking over his face. He was brandishing a butcher knife, she said. As the woman tried to push him out of the doorway, she cut her arm on the knife. She screamed and the man fled the area, according to reports. Anyone with information should contact the Sheriff's Office tip line at 1-800-706-2488. AARP to help with filing tax returns It could pay to file a tax return this year - especially since AARP volunteers will process basic paperwork at no charge. The Treasury Department is refunding excise taxes collected through long-distance phone bills from March 1, 2003, to July 30, 2006, because the government declared the tax invalid. The refunds, ranging from $30 to $60, will be returned through the income tax system. For people who don't file a 1040 because their income falls below the filing requirements, the IRS has developed the 1040T to file for this one-time refund. AARP tax program volunteers will process 1040Ts and noncomplex 1040s at no charge, starting Feb. 1. Appointments can be made by calling the Port Richey United Way office at (877) 828-8929.
