What exactly is Kwanzaa? Created in 1966 by a California professor, Kwanzaa is celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 by millions of African-Americans around the world, encouraging them to remember their African heritage and consider their current place in America. Kwanzaa involves seven principles called Nguzo Saba: Umoja unity, Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).
