NEW PORT RICHEY - It's a feeling Hudson coach Paul Vescio hopes his Cobras can remember: The feeling of hitting the back of the net.
"We outshot everyone (Wednesday), and we just couldn't find it," Vescio said of Hudson's one-goal loss to Zephyrhills in Round 1 of the Ridgewood Rams Winter Tournament. "You've got to find the back of the net, and (Thursday) we did it. It feels great."
Hudson's 3-0 win over Robinson availed its previous loss, but it didn't come without a little hustle and luck. Pat Stone and Taylor Lamphier gave Hudson a 2-0 first-half lead. Though Robinson was without two starters, speed gave the Knights (1-9) several one-on-ones with Hudson freshman keeper Todd Rushing.
"He stopped 'em all," Vescio said. "One-on-ones, everything."
Ryan Fluke knocked in a late goal for Hudson (8-8-1).
Earlier, Blake played nine players and lost 4-0 to Blanche Ely of Pompano Beach. Ridgewood fell two goals behind Alonso (8-3-1), scored three straight, then lost 4-3 on a penalty kick with five minutes left. Kyle Martin scored twice, and Matt Pappas had two assists from the left corner, but Alonso earned a controversial foul in the box. Mike Piemonte scored on a header for the Rams (2-13-1).
"They're a good team who's beaten teams that have beaten us," Ridgewood coach Ed McComiskey said. "We had them for a while, but things happen in the game that you cannot control."
