Services are available to individuals, couples, families and children experiencing a broad range of personal, relationship and family problems.

COUNTYWIDE

Get a closer look at county government

Registration is open for the January session of the County Connection program, which will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 18 through March 15. The sessions will be conducted at various county facilities.

County Connection provides participants an opportunity for a "behind the scenes" look into county government.

Each session covers a series of topics pertaining to county services, such as transportation issues, public safety, the budget, recreation and resources, judicial services, growth and development, health and utilities services.

The program includes audience interaction and allows participants to get answers to their questions and meet county officials.

There is no cost to participate.

Tickets available for benefit fashion show

Tickets are available for a fashion show Feb. 24 to benefit Hernando-Pasco Hospice.

The show will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court. Fashions will be presented by Fine Lines Boutique, which offers attire and accessories for women of all ages, heights and sizes.

Also, emcee Aliki Gable of Sarasota will showcase her line of colorful, hand-painted silk clothing for women size 14 and larger.

Course to help cope with mental illness

The National Alliance on Mental Illness/NAMI Hernando will offer a "Family-to-Family" education series 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 11, at the Beautiful Mind, 10554 Spring Hill Drive.

Classes are structured to help people maintain their own well-being while understanding and supporting an ill relative. The course is taught by a team of trained volunteers.

Sponsor a brick and help VFW Post 10209

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 invites service personnel, businesses and individuals to sponsor a brick for a memorial pond and freedom walk that will be built at the post's new property.

Bricks cost $50, which includes engraving. The memorial will include the brick memorial wall, a flag walkway, fountains, railings, bushes and floodlights. The idea came from post member "Wild" Bill Taylor.

The post, 15166 Spring Hill Drive, recently sold its site. Plans are under way for a new, 12,600-square-foot home off Anderson Snow Road.

Garden club offers a taste of Brooksville

The Brooksville Garden Club recently published its first cookbook, The Taste of Brooksville.

The recipes were collected from members of the community, restaurant owners and garden club members.

The book includes more than 400 recipes, including appetizers, main dishes, desserts and others. It includes tips for cooking, basics and advanced material.

Civil Air Patrol seeks to train new members

The Hernando County Civil Air Patrol is recruiting new members to train in emergency services, counterdrug operations, homeland defense, cadet programs, air search and rescue, and aerospace education.

The patrol is the official auxiliary of the Air Force and is open to those 18 and older. Both air and ground team members are needed, and training is ongoing. The patrol also offers a cadet program for those ages 12 to 18.

The local squadron meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at 3151 Air Commerce Blvd., in the Airport Industrial Park off Spring Hill Drive.

Fair Association will award scholarships

The Hernando County Fair Association will award $2,000 in scholarships for the 2006-07 school year.

Applications are available at all Hernando County high schools, as well as on the fairgrounds Web site at www. hernandocountyfair.com.

Applicants must be Hernando County high school seniors or college students with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to applicants who have been active in the Hernando County Fair within the past five years.

Gardening calendar is now available

The Hernando County Gardening Calendar for 2007 is available at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St.

The calendar includes month-by-month expert advice on Central Florida landscaping. The cost is $3, with proceeds benefiting the Hernando County Master Gardeners.

Students can apply for scholarship program

High school seniors can now receive applications for the Most Valuable Student Scholarship offered by the Elks National Foundation.

Applications for the program and the Legacy Awards can be obtained at any Elks lodge. Students can also check with their guidance counselors or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 Lakeview Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60614-1889.

All applications must be returned to the nearest Elks lodge no later than Jan. 12.

Chorus to offer free song, dance program

Suncoast Harmony Chorus will offer a free four-week program of singing and dancing, barbershop style, at 7 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 2-23 in the Gulf High School chorus room, 5355 School Road.

The program is open to women age 18 and older. Participants will learn new songs and choreography and will perform at the chorus's show March 10 at the Center for the Arts at River Ridge.

Previous musical training or the ability to read music is not required.

Suncoast Harmony Chorus is the west-central Florida chapter of Sweet Adelines International Singers. It is a women's barbershop chorus with more than 40 members in Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties.
