Oldsmar Christian falls in final

Wharton comes out on top of the Third Annual Chase Memorial Invitational.

HUDSON - Oldsmar Christian couldn't get things going in the championship game of the Third Annual Chase Memorial Invitational, losing to Wharton 75-41 on Saturday.

The fifth-ranked team in the state in Class 5A, the Wildcats (12-1) dominated from the start, taking a 17-10 lead in the first quarter and holding Oldsmar Christian (8-5) to eight points in the second.

Oldsmar Christian sophomore Chris Perez scored a game-high 18 and made the all-tournament team.

St. Petersburg Catholic, the fifth-ranked team in the state in Class 3A, took a second loss in as many days, dropping a 55-53 thriller to host Hudson (4-8) earlier.

Junior guard Tyler Hooten made a tying 3-pointer with less than a minute left and picked up a free throw to go up by one. Barons senior Ed Rolax had 17 points, and guard Tracy Parks added seven.

"(Hudson) came out ready to play, and we weren't," said assistant coach Brian Thorton. "You could tell the three games really took it out (of us)."

Thorton was filling in for coach Mike Moran, who was suspended for receiving two technical fouls Friday. "

East Lake (7-7) pulled off a 79-78 overtime win against Jesuit (4-9) to earn fifth place. East Lake forward Jason Stypul led all scorers with 27 points, while senior guard Josh Garcia added 20 points.

Kingdom of the Sun

Lakewood got 26 points from Ed Nixon and held off Williston 66-59 in the third-place game of the 33rd Annual Kingdom of the Sun tournament at Ocala Vanguard.

Nixon was named to the all-tournament team for the Spartans (12-2), who lost in the semifinals to Decatur (Ga.) Columbia, ranked No. 10 in the nation by USA Today.

The Red Devils (11-5), ranked No. 10 in the state Class 3A, trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter. However, Lakewood, ranked third in the state in Class 5A, went on a 9-0 run to pull away.
