The numbers are based on counts by the Defense Department and Associated Press. Most items are based on 2,988 deaths tallied by the Defense Department as of Dec. 28. The AP's count, which includes deaths reported by news staff in Iraq, has been consistently somewhat ahead of the Defense Department's. The percentages for minorities were last updated Dec. 2, 2006. By the numbers 95 Percent who died since major combat ended. 62 Number of dead who were women. 26 Number who were 18 years old. 20 Percent who died nonhostile deaths. By the numbers 2,861 Number who died since major combat ended April 30, 2003. 56 Number who died of illness. 44 percent Percent killed by an improvised explosive device in the past year. 10 percent Percent who were officers. 70 Number older than 45 years. 2 percent Percent who were women. 72 percent Percent who were white. 11 percent Percent who were Hispanic or Latino. 9 percent Percent who were black or African-American. 2 percent Percent who were Asian 1 percent Percent who were American Indian or Alaska native. 1 percent Percent who were native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. 308 Number from California, the most of any state. 8 Number from Wyoming, the least of any state. 36 percent Percent from the South (region according to U.S. Census Bureau). 15 percent Percent from the Northeast (region according to U.S. Census Bureau). 68 percent Percent who served in the Army, the most of any service branch. 1 percent Percent who served in the Air Force, nearly the least of any service branch. (The Coast Guard had one death.) 1,115 The number of deaths in Anbar province, the most for any province since the start of the war.
