Roberts calls for salary raise for judges

On what he called a "historically slow news day," Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will release a report today calling for a raise for federal judges. "This is usually the point at which many will put down the annual report and return to the Rose Bowl," he conceded, but he asked readers to "bear with me long enough to consider" some comparisons. Since 1969, he said, the average U.S. worker's wage, when adjusted for inflation, has risen by about 18 percent. By contrast, the pay for a federal judge has declined by about 24 percent. Judges should not have to accept salaries that "fall further and further behind the cost of living. ... The time is ripe for our nation's judges to receive a substantial salary increase," he said.

Edwards: Social plans trump deficit

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Sunday that his proposals to provide universal health insurance, boost energy conservation and reduce poverty are more important than reducing the federal budget deficit. Edwards, who announced last week that he is seeking his party's nomination, acknowledged that his goals of shrinking the deficit and providing new benefits for poor and middle-class Americans are at odds. "There's a tension between those two," Edwards said on ABC's This Week. "If I were choosing now, I think the investments are more important." In order to help fund his proposals, Edwards has said, he would roll back tax cuts enacted by the Republican-controlled Congress under President Bush.

Judges salaries should be tied into incentive programs like the one they are using for teacher pay. Perhaps Ch. Jus. Roberts would agree to it. Hardworking families are barely making ends meet and he advocates even larger salaries, what a citizen!

All 600 Federal Judges make more than $150,000 anually. John Roberts, who proposed this raise, makes over $200,000. This seems to be more than enough money to support a large family. Just as it is now, money SHOULD be the wrong reason to be a judge.

Federal Judges do not have "terms" and they are not elected. They intentionally have a life time tenure so they will not be affeted by the political fray.

You minimum wage buffoons have missed the point. If you want ethical judges and a judiciary that you can depend on then you have to have salaries comparable to the real world that do not get smaller each year.

Well - don't take the job if the pay is not that great! If you want the job - you get the pay. Beside - we all want a raise - start with a FLAT TAX and we can all make a living!

We should take care of our judges. The politicans all get pay raises. A lot of education and experience is needed to become a Supreme Court Justice. If we don't pay them well the best potential candidates for the position will take jobs elsewhere.

We should be more concerned about the ethics of Judges than their salaries. Also term limits should be enacted.
