Re: Vandals attack holiday inflatables Dec. 28 Times:

In 1964, I turned down a partial athletic scholarship to attend college and decided to follow in my father's and grandfather's footsteps and joined the military.

I may be old fashioned, but felt that if one wants to live in the best country in the world, one should serve their country at least a few years.

Most of the brave men and women protecting us now are 18 to 21 years old. I read in your article about Alexander Oliver, 19, was charged with tackling and tearing apart a 12-foot Santa Claus on someone's lawn. What a credit he is to his community! I wonder if this "gentleman" can honestly look in the mirror each morning.

Hickory Hill merits approval

As a new resident of this area, I have become very interested in the development of the subdivision Hickory Hill. This will be an area of upscale housing and golf courses. In my opinion, Hernando County needs development by a company as renowned as Sierra Properties.

Brooksville and Hernando County are beautiful areas, and this area needs to progress with well-thought-out plans. Sierra Properties is an experienced developer. It has presented a well-thought-out plan for the development of Hickory Hill.

It is my desire to see the commissioners place their approval on this project. However, there may be some issues that need more study. Personally, I feel there are more points for the development than against. I am asking the commissioners to approve Hickory Hill.

Re: A resolution to escape reality - on TV, that is Dec. 31 column by Jeff Webb

Dog shows about all that's left on TV

My husband and I couldn't agree more with everything Webb said in his column. Sad, isn't it, what TV has become?

Webb truly hit the mark with his comments. Even the cable all-news networks think they must give us more than the news, with flashy lead-ins, annoying trailers and nonstop celebrity gossip we couldn't care less about.

We find ourselves playing a lot of Scrabble these days. Thank goodness for the Eukanuba and Westminster dog shows!

Thanks for Webb's entertaining column.
