The Hernando County Sheriff's Office recently held its swearing in and welcome ceremony for the third quarter of 2006.

A ceremony is held each quarter to welcome all new civilian hires and volunteers, and also serves as an official swearing in ceremony for new deputies.

Five deputies and six civilian employees were honored at the ceremony.

Veterans

It should come as no surprise that Marine Corps League Detachment 708 in Spring Hill would be visited by Jack Ryan, the national commandant, as well as Vic Voltaggio, the national junior vice commandant. The two surprised detachment members when they showed up at the Nov. 16 monthly meeting in Spring Hill. The guests were very cordial and were well received by the members.

The detachment has a large membership, the majority of which are actively supporting the major programs of the MCL, including the Young Marines and Toys for Tots programs, in addition to other programs.

A recent program of phone cards for the troops in the field raised more than $3,000 in one day. The proximity of the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa insures participation in the VAVS (VA Voluntary Service) program and financial support for the Haley House. Most importantly, the trauma center at the Tampa VA is a prime example of Marines helping Marines.

Recreation and Sports

Hernando County was represented by four Special Olympics athletes at the Special Olympics "Fall Classic" State Bowling Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.

The journey began in Hernando. Forty-seven bowlers trained for the competition. After county and area competitions, a team of four from Hernando was chosen to participate in the state contest.

The team stayed at the Disney All Star Resort. It was the first time Disney was host of the event and plans are already under way for next year's competition to be held there.

Fireworks were part of both the opening and closing ceremonies. Bowlers from all over the state participated. From Hernando, Gina Stockton and William Taylor each won a silver medal. Nick Schmidt took home a bronze medal and Ron Zahorchak won a fourth place ribbon. Zahorchak was also awarded a gold medal for being voted the Most Inspirational Athlete.

Dave Mastroni, who was unable to attend, was also awarded a gold medal for being voted the Most Inspirational Coach. Ken Diemer, the head coach, was also unable to attend. Fred Click, the county coordinator and his wife, Frances, a coach, accompanied the athletes.
