  • For their own good

Want to vent about soaring insurance rates or other state issues? State Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, and Sen. Victor Crist, R-Tampa, are holding two town hall meetings to hear from constituents. The first will be held from 6 to 9 tonight at the Pasco County Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Ave. If you missed that one, the second will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the University Area Community Center Complex, 14013 N 22nd St., Tampa.

Car dealer sues city over fees

A car dealership has filed a complaint against the city. The complaint, filed Dec. 29 in Pasco-Pinellas Circuit Court by Gateway Honda, 8442 U.S. 19, alleges that the $102,487 the dealership paid for required building permit fees to construct the dealership in 2004 was excessive. Building official Ed Winch said the city lowered its building permit fees since 2005, after the dealership was built. Because building departments are self-sufficient and generate their own revenue for inspections and employee salaries, Winch said, they are allowed to raise or lower fees as needed. Jim Kristoff, Honda's general manager, declined to comment.

Center to add preschool program

The Salvation Army Community Center, 6645 Ridge Road, is adding a preschool to its child care program, which already includes a before- and afterschool program for students in kindergarten through middle school. The preschool will open Monday and house 45 children ages 2 to 5. The cost is $100 per week, and children must bring their own lunch. Interested parents should contact Lila Hookins, program director, to apply. For more information, call Hookins at (727) 815-8539.
