  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

A gem of an employer heads to Oldsmar

Sarah Coventry HPP Inc., which sells jewelry like it's Tupperware, is moving to Oldsmar. The company, a direct seller of jewelry, has put sparkly things on the Miss America crown and game show models for more than 50 years. It says that the move from Providence, R.I., will bring 100 new high-wage jobs to Pinellas over the next three years. Sarah Coventry began moving its inventory to a new Oldsmar facility in December. The company said it considered staying in Providence but was enticed by the quality of life, training, tax incentives and tax structure in Pinellas.

It's more than a bowl, it's personal

Employees at Third Federal Savings have a lot riding on the outcome of the BCS championship game Monday night: the right to wear jeans to work on Tuesday. Since Cleveland-based Third Federal is a two-state operation, employees are geared up for the showdown between Florida and Ohio State. If the Gators win, Florida employees get to casual. If the Buckeyes win, the right goes to Ohio. The rivalry is generating lots of bantering, side bets and desk decorations. Even the Florida State fans are rooting for the Gators, regional manager Diana Neely reports.

What slump? Condo's going up

Behold that increasingly rare species: An upbeat condo developer. Novare-intown Tampa Development LLC has started construction on Element, a 34-story high-rise condominium at 808 N Franklin St. Novare-intown bought lots from TECO Energy and plans to open the 395 units in two years. Near the Element site is Novare's other contribution to downtown Tampa's skyline: a partly built condo complex called SkyPoint. Corus Bank of Chicago and ArCap Finance Corp. of Irving, Texas are financing Element.

Corrections

-NASA's target year for returning astronauts to the moon is 2020. A Dec. 28 Associated Press story on the agency's efforts to appeal to young people gave a different year.

- A photo caption Sunday gave the wrong title for Dario Compain. He is federal chief of security for Tampa International Airport, St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.
