Hospital's first baby of the year is a girl 

Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center welcomed its first baby of the new year Tuesday. Christina Dew gave birth to a 7 pound, 2.5 ounce girl at 4:41 p.m. and named her Jocelyn Nicole Dew. Gift baskets were presented to the Dew family for having the first baby delivered at the hospital in 2007. Citrus County's first baby of the year was born about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Citrus Memorial Health System.

Explorers board meets Tuesday

The Florida A&M University Black Males College Explorers Program advisory board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Citrus High School in Room 348. The meeting is open to anyone interested in becoming a member of the advisory board, supporting the cause or to students who would like to participate. Rescued manatee in grave condition

The injured manatee rescued last week in Kings Bay remains in grave condition at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, zoo spokeswoman Rachel Nelson said. The manatee, dubbed Big Brother, has significant injuries from a boat collision. The animal is being kept in shallow water in a hospital pool at the zoo. Veterinarians are not sure whether the manatee's condition is treatable and additional tests are expected, Nelson said. The latest information from the state reports that eight manatees were found dead in Citrus County in 2006. Three died because they were struck by boats and a fourth died of other human-related causes.
