Scholar's choice series scheduled for library

The Scholar's Choice Lecture and Discussion Series explores literary classics and popular works presented by scholars from the University of South Florida's Department of English at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N Osceola Ave.

- 2 p.m. Jan. 17 - Gilgamesh, an ancient Sumerian epic poem with translation by Stephen Mitchell and presented by Dr. Nancy Jane Tyson.

- 2 p.m. Jan. 24 - Walden, by Henry James Thoreau, presented by Dr. Maryhelen Harmon.

Brooker Creek hike set for Saturday

Take a walk through time on a guided hike along the .75-mile Education Center Trail from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. See how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Preregistration is required and space is limited for this free event. All ages welcome, although children younger than 6 may find this hike challenging. Call (727) 453-6800.

Community event to honor Dr. King

All ages are welcome to participate in a community event honoring the life and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with children's games, activities and entertainment from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at Ulmer Park, 301 West Bay Drive, Largo. A group photo of everyone in attendance will be taken at 5 p.m. All proceeds from the event will be collected into a scholarship in the name of Dr. King and awarded to a deserving recipient wishing to further his or her education. Boating course in two lessons

The Clearwater flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer America's Boating Course, a two-lesson program designed to appeal to boaters who cannot find time for a full, comprehensive boating course. Participants will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Clearwater Sailing Center, 1001 Gulf Blvd., Sand Key, Clearwater. Open to all ages. Socrates Cafe slated for Thursday

Join Tyler Crawford of Tarpon Springs High School as he moderates the Socrates Cafe at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 11, leading teens in an hour-long discussion of philosophy, politics, literature, current issues and pop culture at the Palm Harbor Library, 2330 Nebraska Ave. Call (727) 784-3332.
