Got grease? Don't dump it in the drain

With holiday cooking kicking into high gear, Pinellas County utilities officials urge residents to dispose of cooking oil and grease properly. That means, don't dump it down the drain.

Plumbing is only meant to handle water, and like any artery, sewer lines also are susceptible to clogging. After cooling, pour grease and fat into a disposable container, wrap it in a plastic bag to reduce odor and place it in the trash. For large amounts of cooking oil, Pinellas County's Hazardous Electronics and Chemical Waste Collection Center accepts dropoffs for free. Call (727) 464-7500, or visit pinellascounty.org/utilities.
