'Colors of Greece' Reception

'Colors of Greece' Reception: An exhibit of landscapes and seascapes of Greece by Kerasia Aravanopoulou opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center, 101 S Pinellas Ave. The Greece native studied at the School of Fine Arts at New York University. The "Colors of Greece" oil paintings will be on display through Feb. 28. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Noted Pianist in Concert: Pianist Joseph Schwartz will perform a program of Beethoven, Ravel, Mozart, Chopin and Moussorgsky at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 E Pine St., inside City Hall. He was a professor of piano from 1960-1998 at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded its Summer Piano Institute in 1983 and directed it through 1993. He is a member of the Oberlin Trio and regularly gives master classes throughout the United States. Tickets are $16 and $14. 942-5605.

Dance Film With Sets By Picasso: Between 1917 and 1962, Picasso created designs for nine ballets, among them Le Train Blue dating from 1924 and Le Tricorne from 1919. Performed by the Paris Opera Ballet, the film will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, 600 Klosterman Road, on the Tarpon Springs campus of St. Petersburg College. Playhouse to Present 'Unsinkable': The rollicking musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, gives a fictionalized account of the life of Molly Tobin Brown, who rose from rags to riches and is best remembered for surviving the Titanic. The show, presented by the Francis Wilson Playhouse, opens at 8 p.m. Jan. 11 at the playhouse at 302 Seminole St., Clearwater. Printmakers Exhibits: The 15th Florida Printmakers National Competition and Printmakers of the Dunedin Fine Art Center open with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 12 at the center at 1143 Michigan Blvd. Competition judge Joe Sanders, chair of Florida State University's art department, will give a lecture at 6 p.m. The art center show features the work of DFAC faculty and students. 'The Wizard of Oz': The production is based on the original 1902 stage version of The Wizard of Oz. The show, quite different from the 1939 movie, was a huge hit and toured the country for more than a decade. Yiddish Folk and Gypsy Jazz Music in Concert: The Yiddish songs, Gypsy jazz and East European folk music of "Nikitov" have been popular since the group formed six years ago in the Netherlands. It features Yiddish chanteuse Niki Jacobs, Gypsy jazz violin virtuoso Jelle van Tongeren, Eastern European music specialist Adam Good on acoustic guitar and Jason Sypher on double bass. The group will perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine St., inside City Hall. Tickets are $18 and $16. Call 942-5605.

Picasso C eramics: An exhibit of "Picasso Ceramics" from the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, will be held through Sunday at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors , and free to children and students with ID. Sunday is free to all. Honeymoon Island G uided W alks: The Florida Park Service offers ranger-guided walks of Honeymoon Island at 11 a.m. on Saturdays through March. The island is home to such wildlife as ospreys, great horned owls and gopher tortoises. Walkers can bring binoculars and a field guide. Meet the ranger at the head of the nature trail. The guided hike is free, though park visitors have to pay the regular park entrance fee of $5 per carload (two to eight people), $3 for one person in a car and $1 per person for walkers or cyclists.
